The Scorpions of The Gambia are set to face the national team of Central African Republic in the upcoming FIFA international window on Friday, March 23rd.
The home friendly will be the second such meeting in just over a year between the Scorpions and the Les Fauves, now managed by former Gambia coach, Raoul Savoy, who was relieved from the Scorpions coaching job back in 2015. The Gambian team emerged with a 2-1 win in the encounter between the pair in Rabat, Morocco, where Modou Barrow scored his first international goal for the Gambia alongside the goal from Ipswich’s Mustapha Carayol.
This upcoming encounter is part of Sang Ndong’s team’s preparations for the 2019 African Cup qualifiers, where they are set to take on North African giants, Algeria in September this year.
It will be team’s first International game this year. The last of which was at their training camp in Marrakech, Morocco, last November, where they beat the Moroccan CHAN team 2-1 in a friendly. The goal from Assan Ceesay and the long range effort from Dawda Ngum secured that morale boosting victory.
In the game’s announcement, which came on the Football Federation’s website, also laid to rest the confusing speculation that has been making the rounds on both the social media and the Web, of another upcoming friendly mstch with the Kenyan national side, after stating there is no such plans for the team.
“The Gambia Football Federation wishes to inform the general public that there is no plan to play the Harambe Stars of Kenya for a friendly in March.
The public is therefore been reminded that the Gambia’s confirmed fixture is with the CAR schedule for Banjul on Friday 23rd March, 2018,” they wrote in their message.
The Gambia is one of the only few countries in the mainland Africa, who are yet to make a first appearance in the African Cup of Nations and once again their path to the elusive championship is a tricky one, with ties against Togo and Benin to follow the dwell with Algeria.
The Scorpions are the lowest in the FIFA ranking among the quartet and will have to perform miracles to out jump them in securing a first AFCON spot.
