Former Steve Biko and Gambia International midfield player, Abdoulie Bojang has been named as the new head coach of The Gambia’s under 17s.
The appointment of the former U17 Gambia women’s coach, who is a CAF B License holder, was confirmed through a release posted on the GFF website on Tuesday, 13th march, a fortnight after the initial appointment on March 1st and he will be taking charge of the Gambia’s youth ranks for the next two years.
Up till his appointment, the 39-year-old former Biko coach, who also represented the Bakau-based club as a player, and the Gambia national team at all ranks from the mid 90s to mid 2000s, was in charge of the country’s women U17 team, whom he recently guided to the second round of the on-going World Cup qualifiers, where they lost to Ghana. He was also the Head Coach of The Gambia team that won the four-team invitational football tournament in Mbour, Senegal, in 2014 and later the assistant to National U-20 Coach during the 2017 African Youth Championship qualifiers.
Mr Bojang aslo captained Biko to the 2000 FA triumph, and was a key player for the national side between 1998 to 2007, although he had been in the set-up since 1996, when he joined the youth ranks. He continued representing the country on the international scene until his retirement in 2007, and was part of the team that lost the 2000 Almicar Cabral cup final to host, Senegal. He returned to Biko in 2010 as coach, three years after retiring as player, and he helped his hometown club to league title glory in 2013.
According the GFF statement, the young coach is currently on a Gambia National Olympic Committee ( GNOC ) Scholarship program to Hungary for a Three Months international Coaching Course funded by the Olympic Solidarity through the recommendation of the Gambia Football Federation.
